Born on July 13, 1955 at Tindharey, a small hamlet in Kurseong, Darjeeling, India, the veteran Nepali author Bindya Subba is equivocal both in prose and poetry, who has devoted her four decades in writing. She completed her M.A. and B.Ed. simultaneously with B.Sc. (Honours). Although, she started her career as a teacher at Renuka Girls’ School at Tindharey, later she shifted to nursing. She worked with Sadar Hospital, Darjeeling and retired from School of Nursing, Darjeeling as a senior tutor. She started writing from his schooldays. Her first published work was ‘Jeewanphool’ featured in magazine ‘Sagar’, Tindharey, in 1968. Her first short story ‘Jalan’ was featured in ‘Darpan’ (VS 2027), Kathmandu, Nepal. She has published books of short story, novel, memoirs and poems and her essays, papers, articles have been featured in various magazines, journals across world. ‘Phoolharoo, Pahadharoo, Dharsaharoo’ (1986), ‘Athaha’ (1999), ‘Nirgaman’ (2006), ‘Seemanata’ (2017) are her novels while, ‘Hospice’ (2003, 2019) is her much read short story collection. ‘Kathakram’ (1984), ‘Sheetlahar’ is another short story collection written by Subba. ‘Timra Aksharharooko Ayam’ (2007) is her memoir. ‘Hridayam’ (2009) is her spiritual book. She published poetry anthology ‘Antarnihit’ in 2004. Her novel ‘Athaha’ has been translated into English, Hindi, Odia, Assamese, Maithili. She has also published her essay collection ‘Leelaharooma Maya’ (2079 VS). Subba has travelled extensively across the globe and has written wonderful travelogues viz. ‘Aksharharooko Yatrama Sydney’, ‘Arab Sagarko Kinarama’ (2008), ‘Ek Swapnil Yatra America’, etc. Subba has translated national bestsellers ‘Draupadi’ and ‘Tyagpatra’ into Nepali. Apart from Sahitya Akademi award for her novel ‘Athaha’ (2003), Subba has been conferred with Vijaya Shree Award (1997), Shrasta Puraskar (1998), Diyalo Award, Radheya Poem Award (2005), Ram Raj Panta Smriti Award (2057 VS), Mainali Puraskar (2021), Devkumari Thapa Smriti Puraskar, etc. She is the founder of Vasudha, a society for Nepali female authors of India, founder and main patron of Mandara Publication, life member of Nepali Sahitya Sammelan, Shivkumar Rai Smriti Academy. She also acted as the member of advisory body for Nepali literature with Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, India. ‘Bindya Subba Sahityik Bidushi: Antarang Bahirangharooma’ (editor – Nagendra Gorkha), a tribute on her life and works was published on July 13, 2020 at Tindharey, her birthplace. She is the life member of Trained Nurses’ Association of India. She lives in Darjeeling, India.
